October 17 th, 2004: Canonball Run

A "Canonball Run" is known as an all out race accross the United States. (Ever watch Burt Reynolds, Farrah Fawcett). And although we were not racing, it was as close as we will get. We broke all our rules on this one. All for the sake of show business. 3488 Miles in 6 Days, that's a new record for us. What do I mean by breaking all the rules: We'll we drove in bad weather, through traffic, at night and in bad weather, long hours, etc.,and without stopping to sightsee. We did not stop at any campgrounds. We dry-docked at truckstops and rest stops. We arrived in Salt Lake City late at night, the forcast called for snow at the higher elevations. We extrated the Jeep and seperated for the climb. We had done this climb before too. So this time we had a plan. Lynn went shopping for chains for the Bus (just in case) and other stuff, while I departed in the bus to start the long slow climb out of Salt Lake City to Park City. And according to plan we meet at the top and stowed the Jeep and continued through what would be the hardest part of the trek: Through the Rocky Mountains to Cheyenne, WY. To our fortune the snow was not sticking and the bus performed flawlessly till just outside our destination when we had a blowout. This was our first and I could not believe how well behaved the Bus was blowing a tire at 70 MPH. read more about it below.

After the explosion... Blowout.... we made it to the next exit where we surveyed the damage. The piece of rubber which must have peeled off took the awning rod with it. It also managed to take all 10 stainless simulator lug nuts with it. For the first time I was prepared to change the tire myself and that I did. It felt good to know that I am no longer dependent on roadside asistance. Not that they would have help much according to our previous experience with them....I had my 4 foot breaker bar (yellow) which had saved us in Stockton also, now would give me the leverage to crack these nuts. I changed the tire by myself, actually the kids helped quite a bit. It took about an hour. We now have a set of 4 new drive tires. Rides Nice
