GPS and Cars – Finding Your Way Around

It used to be that if you couldn’t find your destination you pulled into a gas station to ask the attendant, you bought a map and tried to navigate your way to your location or you called the venue and ask them for directions. Or if you believe in the male stereotype, you don’t admit to being lost and use some sort of crazy intuition to find your way. The technology of today’s vehicles gives motorists a new way to navigate called GPS (Global Positioning Systems)

How Do They Do That?

A properly installed GPS in a car can not only give the driver valuable, useful information but can also offer the best routes thanks to a built in digital map. If there isn’t one installed in the car you have the option of purchasing a dashboard or portable GPS and for some folks they even have the option of using their phone. With the advent of GPS for cars, getting lost became a lot harder but it also gives the cars that offered GPS and bigger advantage from a selling and rental standpoint. So how does it work? Without getting too technical, you have 4 satellites in space and the unit itself has three segments which when combined allows these devices to clearly direct you down the right path.

How Do I Pick One?

If you’re the type that likes having directions to places on hand then you want a new car or rental vehicle that has a built in GPS. For a more affordable solution there are GPS devices that plug into the cigarette lighter but may not be as intuitive as a built in version. When you take a look at the car’s layout, figure out if it’s a cumbersome or one that would work with the way you drive. Two of the most important elements of a good GPS are that it provides:

1. Multiple paths to your destination
2. Vocal direction and visual direction. You don’t want to only have one option.

GPS is not flawless by any means but having a good navigation system in your car makes getting around that much easier.

Is Having GPS in a Car That Important?

That all depends on how often you travel on the road, and if you’re always going to new locations that are unfamiliar with you. For a more generic application though you can map out your course or find your way back if your become lost. If your car gets stolen then an installed GPS can help police find your car. Some insurance companies even offer reduced rates for car owners who have GPS installed in their cars. So is it important to have GPS? Certainly the benefits are great and as vehicles begin to evolve, pre-installed GPS may become a standard feature. Until then, take your time to look at the functionality of the GPS system in the car you’re looking at and if it works for you before making your final decision.

The Beauty About Sports Cars

Cars, in general, possess both form and function.  The designers did not compromise aesthetics with performance.

However, there is something about sports cars that make them stand out when it comes to beauty. And we are not talking about external features only.

There is more to physical features like, sleekness of the car, that determine its beauty.

Here are some of the characteristics that endear sports cars to car enthusiasts.

- Sports cars have attitude at first glance.

Sports cars speak the attitude that they possess. They are not like mere cars whose presence can be ignored. They captivate the eyes of those who see them. They imply that thrill and enjoyment van be expected when their hands are those that control the wheel.

Sports cars stand above other cars, that are seen very day, primarily because   the designs imply what they are capable of doing. A sleek look really matches a car with sleek activities.

- Sports cars possess greater power.

Their power comes from their more powerful engines and has other specifications than other the cars have. A sports car can do more than ordinary tasks because of the features that only they possess.

- Sports cars are made for driving pleasure.

Ordinary cars make driving monotonous and boring, while on the other hand, sports cars primarily aim to give the drivers a “high” feeling of speed and control. Only sports cars can provide that need for drivers who seek adventure.

Sports cars bring the thrill back to driving. They express what other cars can not.  Sports cars are not designed just for practicality, but for pleasure too.

- Sports cars are made for drivers who enjoy their ‘wild side’.

Drivers do have the need to express this ‘wild side’. Sports cars make any road a venue to satisfy those needs.  Only sports cars can match the “wildness” that drivers innately have. For that reason, sports cars perfectly compliment the child in every driver.

- Sports cars have evolved and improved through the years.

Drivers appreciate the improvements that have been made to sports cars. You could say that sports car technology has infinite possibilities. The stereotypes of sports cars have long been debunked. Those limits have been crossed. The only thing that car enthusiasts can do is to watch as these improvements unfold before their very eyes.

- Sports cars make their owners feel good about themselves.

Sports cars are lifeless. They cannot feel proud because they are beautiful, but their owners take pride in having them.

With all these things said about the intrinsic and extrinsic beauty that sports cars possess, only a person who does not appreciate their beauty and/or speed will not opt to get one.

Car Accessory: Red Letter Objects for Cars

One of the dreams of people around the world is to have a car. A perfect dream machine that not only can reduce their commuting trouble immensely but which would also be a tremendous add on to their status symbol. No wonder then that people have always wanted to own this most utility machine. Any new model unleashed sees a virtual stampede and people fall on each other to buy it. Isn’t it ironical then that people don’t pay much attention to car accessory. The most important element of a car and which goes a long way in enhancing the utility of car. If people give even ten per cent of total attendance to car accessory that they give to car then they can be rest assured that the value of their cars would increase manifold.

A few examples would go a long way in illustrating this point incisively. Take the case of car stereo. A gadget that is instrumental in warding of boredom and fatigue which invariably sets in on long journeys. Similar is the case with car mats. Contrary to public opinion car mats are extremely useful and play a major role in keeping the car clean and protecting it from dust and water.

Similar is the case with car roof box. Another of that utility product that enhances the utility of car immensely. Imagine if one has to shift his residence how hassled he can be, taking care of packing and looking for a vehicle which can transport his belongings to his new place. With a car with roof box this type of problems never crop up as the belongings can very neatly be tucked up at the roof box. These examples should hammer home the point that car accessory indeed is one very important element of the car and its absense can rob the car of a lot of its utilities.

It, therefore, must be understood that car accessory indeed is one very important constituent of cars and deserve far more attention than it gets.

Diesel vs Electric vs Hybrid Cars

When the glossy marketing techniques of the automobile companies make it so difficult to choose just one of the “perfect”, highly developed cars of the future, as they are presented to you in all those commercials, it’s more and more difficult to weigh your choice. Let’s see beyond the shiny coachwork, the comfy leather seats and the multi-tech car stereo and focus on the element that makes all the difference: the car’s engine! Diesel, electric or hybrid motor, now that is the big question?

The major advantages (and since during crisis the one that tends to outshine all the other advantages) of Diesel cars is fuel economy and therefore money saving. If we were to compare it with a vehicle with gasoline engine, we would see that the Diesel car needs far less fuel helping you, on a long term to recover the costs implied by its purchase. Another big pro, sustained by all Diesel cars owners, is driving performance, given by the fact that they deliver much more of their rated power than a petrol engine, givine you the chance to drive quicker from a stop sign, giving you a sensation similar to the one you have when driving a sports car. Still, there’s still a long road to take till technology and mechanics, working together, reach perfection. There are some big minuses, too, that Diesel cars have. The first major inconvenient about Diesel motors is given by its costs. They are more expensive than the gasoline engines, even though, as I have mentioned, those costs can be recovered by the money savings you will make in fuel buying. Another “handicap” would be their weight, since they have much higher compression ratios .Now, for the nature friendly drivers, Diesel’s emission of smelly smoke can be a real problem, not to mention that they are a lot noisier the gasoline engines.

Now, let’s continue climbing this pyramid of the car engine’s technology and make an inventory of the pros and cos of the electric cars. This type of car seems to be any environment concerned driver’s dream. Using one or two motors for propulsion, therefore converting fuel into electricity, they are the less polluting type of vehicles at the moment. That’s not all. If you’re a speed addicted, you will surely appreciate its second major advantage: it can launch from standstill with maximum force, where do you add that, from a mechanically point of view, is much easier to get it repaired. To lower down your enthusiasm, I will have to remind you, though, that you should schedule your driving sessions way in advance, for it will take a while till you get its batteries charged. Also, another issue is represented by the recharging stations’ infrastructure, their high costs, to be more specific, which instantly increases the costs of electricity for the electric cars driven there to recharge their batteries.

We have finally retied the highest position in the hierarchy of car technology, where we can find, nicely displayed, the car of the future: the hybrid car, the one that brings together the energy of the electrical motor with the power of the gas-powered engine. Immediately a thought crosses our minds: it’s the environmental friendly car we have all been expecting, with lower pollution emissions. There’s more! We might be concerned about pollution and CO emission, but we cannot stop thinking about the effect a new car’s purchase might have on our wallet. Luckily, its batteries do not need to be charged by an external source and hybrid cars determine a reducing of the dependency on fossil fuels. You might be thinking: since this is the closer to perfection car of our-days, what disadvantages might it present? Well, the first one would be that they are not accessible to everyone, being expensive even from the car lot. The second problem, that we’ve tackled when we focused our attention on Diesel cars, would have to be the engine’s heavy weight. Now, one embarrassing problem and concern for manufacturers would be the high voltage accumulated in its batteries, which diminishes its safety in case of car accident.

In conclusion, dear future buyer, it’s you who decides which is the most important quality from your perspective, the one should prevail in a car: safety, speed, environment safety, costs, reliability etc. There’s no such thing as the perfect type of car, only the newest type of car!

3 Advantages Of Hybrid Cars Over Conventional Cars

Due to the rising cost of fuel and the environmental damage it causes to our planet, many car owners or buyers are looking for an alternative way to save money. Let’s face it, fuel supply is finite and the prices of gas is only going to rise higher and higher. That is where a hybrid car has its advantages

Hybrid cars have been gaining in popularity in recent years. With lower cost of production and new hybrid car technology being developed, owning a hybrid car is becoming affordable to everyone.

Hybrid Cars Saves Gas

The obvious advantage of using hybrid cars is that it saves gas. Combining the cleaner energy of an electric motor with the long range capacity of a gasoline engine allows a hybrid car to save as much as 30 miles a gallon. One feature of hybrid cars is that the gasoline engine is shut off automatically when the car stops. This also helps in saving fuel. That is also the reason why hybrid cars are so quiet why it is stationary. The gasoline engine is automatically turned on when you step on the accelerator pedal.

Hybrid Cars Are Environment Friendly

Hybrid cars emit lower toxic emissions compared to conventional gasoline-powered cars due to less gasoline being burned. It is environmentally friendly, causes less pollution and releases less carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. If you do not know, carbon dioxide is one of the primary reasons for rising global warming. For example, the Toyota Prius can reduce tailpipe emissions by up to ninety percent and the greenhouse gas emissions by as much as fifty percent.

Tax Incentives For Hybrid Cars

Due to world political pressures around the world to reduce greenhouse emissions, President Bush signed an agreement in 2005 to provide huge tax relief to hybrid car buyers. The tax incentive varies by model and are based on two factors

1. How fuel efficient the hybrid car is compared to a conventional car in 2002 with the same weight class.

2. How much gasoline the hybrid car can save in its lifetime compared with an equivalent conventional car

For example, a Honda Accord hybrid car have reduced tax credits of $600 while a Toyota Prius has a tax credit of $3150. Do note that the tax credits do expire after 2010 for most hybrid cars.

Hybrid car manufacturers are continually researching for more ways to reduce fuel consumption and better fuel efficiency. Also as more hybrid cars are being adopted, the cost of hybrid cars will reduce making it more affordable for everyone.
